Greg Norton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/norton.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7412\" src=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/norton.jpg\" alt=\"norton\" width=\"349\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/norton.jpg 349w, http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/norton-238x300.jpg 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px\" \/><\/a><strong>Name:<\/strong>\u00a0Greg Norton<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rank:<\/strong>\u00a0176<\/p>\n<p><strong>Position:<\/strong>\u00a03B<\/p>\n<p><strong>Years With White Sox:<\/strong>\u00a01996-2000<\/p>\n<p>Greg Norton was the 2nd round draft choice of the White Sox in 1993.\u00a0 He made his major league debut on August 10, 1996, appearing as a pinch runner for Harold Baines in the 8th inning of the White Sox 8-7 loss against the Brewers.\u00a0 The next night, he got hits in his first 2 plate appearances against the Tigers.\u00a0 He appeared in only 11 games for the big league club that year, finishing with a .217 average.<\/p>\n<p>He returned to Triple A Nashville in 1997 and\u00a0made another token appearance with the White Sox.\u00a0 He appeared in 18 games this time, putting up a .265 average in his limited playing time.<\/p>\n<p>Norton stuck with the big league club in 1998, appearing in 132 games, mostly at first base as Frank Thomas transitioned to strictly being a DH.\u00a0 In his first shot at extensive playing time, Norton struggled, hitting a lowly .237\u00a0with only 9 home runs and 36 RBI.<\/p>\n<p>When Robin\u00a0Ventura left as a free agent, Norton became the team&#8217;s starting third baseman in 1999.\u00a0 He improved his average to .255 and hit\u00a016 home runs while driving in 50.\u00a0 Norton\u00a0ran into some problems trying to replace a legend, as he was subjected to taunts from the fans.\u00a0 Things boiled over in early September, when he committed 2 errors in one inning, leading to chants of &#8220;We want Robin&#8221; from the crowd.\u00a0 Norton responded\u00a0by hitting his second homer of the game,\u00a0glaring\u00a0at the fans as he\u00a0ran to first and\u00a0bowing to the crowd after\u00a0crossing home plate.<\/p>\n<p>2000 saw the White Sox run away with the Central Division title, but things continued to not go well for Norton.\u00a0 His playing time diminished, and he was sent back to Triple A for a bit.\u00a0 He finished the year with a .244 average, hitting only 6 home runs with 28 RBI.\u00a0 Norton was left off the playoff roster in place of, ironically, Harold Baines, the same player he pinch ran for to start his career 5 years earlier.\u00a0 Following the season, Norton was allowed to leave the organization as a free agent.<\/p>\n<p>Norton&#8217;s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" bgcolor=\"#ffffff\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th bgcolor=\"#c0c0c0\"><span style=\"color: #000000;
