{"id":21419,"date":"2024-07-08T03:30:06","date_gmt":"2024-07-08T09:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/?p=21419"},"modified":"2024-07-04T15:31:43","modified_gmt":"2024-07-04T21:31:43","slug":"fifty-years-of-music-1998","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/2024\/07\/fifty-years-of-music-1998\/","title":{"rendered":"Fifty Years Of Music \u2013 1998"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/cd.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2693\" src=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/cd.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a>Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.\u00a0 In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end\u00a0<em>Billboard<\/em>\u00a0Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.<\/p>\n<p>We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 1998, the year I turned 24.\u00a0 The chart formula for the Hot 100 changed again in December, allowing songs to chart based on airplay alone if there was no commercial single released.\u00a0 Thanks to my newly acquired hour plus commute, you&#8217;d think I&#8217;d have picked up more of the music of the day, but the numbers keep going down.\u00a0 A mere 21 songs remain familiar to me today, with just twelve of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.<\/p>\n<p>#87: Jewel \u2013 <em>You Were Meant for Me<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 37 plays<\/p>\n<p>Jewel hits the year-end chart for the second straight year thanks to a total of 65 weeks in the Hot 100.<\/p>\n<p>#81: Spice Girls \u2013 <em>Spice Up Your Life<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 9 plays<\/p>\n<p>The lead single from the group&#8217;s sophomore album, it peaked at #18 on the Hot 100 in just its fourth week on the chart.<\/p>\n<p>#79: The Verve \u2013 <em>Bittersweet Symphony<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>Considered one of the defining songs of the Britpop era, it reached #12.<\/p>\n<p>#74: Edwin McCain \u2013 <em>I&#8217;ll Be<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 16 plays<\/p>\n<p>McCain&#8217;s second charting single, it went to #5, becoming his first and only top ten hit.<\/p>\n<p>#58: Lisa Loeb \u2013 <em>I Do<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 16 plays<\/p>\n<p>Peaking at #17, it became Loeb&#8217;s second-highest charting single, following her debut single.<\/p>\n<p>#57: Third Eye Blind \u2013 <em>Semi-Charmed Life<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 18 plays<\/p>\n<p>The highest charting single about a crystal meth addiction, it reached #4 and spent a total of 43 weeks on the chart.<\/p>\n<p>#51: Barenaked Ladies \u2013 <em>One Week<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 17 plays<\/p>\n<p>True to its name, it spent a single week atop the Hot 100 in October.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>#35: Chumbawamba \u2013 <em>Tubthumping<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 32 plays<\/p>\n<p>The group&#8217;s only charting single in the US, it spent two of its 31 weeks on the Hot 100 at #6.<\/p>\n<p>#28: Marcy Playground \u2013 <em>Sex and Candy<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>The top Modern Rock Tracks song of the year, thanks to a then-record fifteen weeks at #1, it peaked at #8 on the Hot 100.<\/p>\n<p>#25: Faith Hill \u2013 <em>This Kiss<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 12 plays<\/p>\n<p>Hill&#8217;s fifth #1 on the Hot Country Singles &amp; Tracks chart, it reached #7 on the Hot 100.<\/p>\n<p>#23: Aerosmith \u2013 <em>I Don&#8217;t Want to Miss a Thing<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 13 plays<\/p>\n<p>The band&#8217;s first, and only, chart topping hit, it spent four weeks at #1 in September.<\/p>\n<p>#22: Backstreet Boys \u2013 <em>Everybody (Backstreet&#8217;s Back)<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>The group&#8217;s second top ten hit, it spent 22 weeks on the chart, topping out at #4.<\/p>\n<p>#20: Sarah McLachlan \u2013 <em>Adia<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>Peaking at #3, it became McLachlan&#8217;s first top ten hit in the US.<\/p>\n<p>#14: Will Smith \u2013 <em>Gettin&#8217; Jiggy wit It<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 19 plays<\/p>\n<p>Spending three weeks on top of the Hot 100 in March, the track won the 1999 Grammy Award for the Best Rap Solo Performance.<\/p>\n<p>#13: Celine Dion \u2013 <em>My Heart Will Go On<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>The love theme from <em>Titanic<\/em>, it spent two weeks at #1 at the end of winter.<\/p>\n<p>#11: Third Eye Blind \u2013 <em>How&#8217;s It Going to Be<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>Spending a full year on the Hot 100, it topped out at #9.<\/p>\n<p>#10: Paula Cole \u2013 <em>I Don&#8217;t Want to Wait<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 20 plays<\/p>\n<p>Used as the theme song to <em>Dawson&#8217;s Creek<\/em>, this second single from Cole&#8217;s sophomore album reached #11 and remains her last charting hit.<\/p>\n<p>#8: Elton John \u2013 <em>Candle in the Wind 1997<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>A re-working of his 1973 hit in tribute of the deceased Princess Diana, it spent fourteen weeks atop the Hot 100, John\u2019s ninth and final #1 hit.<\/p>\n<p>#4: Savage Garden \u2013 <em>Truly Madly Deeply<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>The track spent a full year on the Hot 100, becoming the first song in the chart&#8217;s history to spend its first 52 weeks in the top 30.\u00a0 It spent half a year in the top ten, peaking at #1 in January.<\/p>\n<p>#3: Shania Twain \u2013 <em>You&#8217;re Still the One<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 12 plays<\/p>\n<p>The highest-peaking single by a country artist in the 1990s, it spent eight consecutive weeks at #2.<\/p>\n<p>#2: Brandy and Monica \u2013 <em>The Boy is Mine<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>The duet, which spent thirteen weeks atop the charts, was the first #1 hit for both singers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.\u00a0 In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end\u00a0Billboard\u00a0Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.
