the Earth.\u00a0 In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end\u00a0<em>Billboard<\/em>\u00a0Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.<\/p>\n<p>We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 1997, the year I graduated from college, started working at my current company, and celebrated my 23rd birthday.\u00a0 Thanks to my newly acquired hour plus commute, you&#8217;d think I&#8217;d have picked up more of the music of the day, but the numbers keep going down.\u00a0 A mere 25 songs remain familiar to me today, with 15 of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.<\/p>\n<p>#95: The Cranberries \u2013 <em>Free to Decide<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 16 plays<\/p>\n<p>The group&#8217;s final charting hit in the US, it peaked at #8 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and #22 on the Hot 100.<\/p>\n<p>#94: Aqua \u2013 <em>Barbie Girl<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>Leading to a lawsuit from Barbie&#8217;s corporate masters, the song reached #7.<\/p>\n<p>#87: Madonna \u2013 <em>Don&#8217;t Cry for Me Argentina<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>Recorded for the <em>Evita<\/em> soundtrack, with Madonna in the title role, it went to #8 and was the first song to originate in a stage musical to hit the top ten since 1985.<\/p>\n<p>#82: Los del Rio \u2013 <em>Macarena (Bayside Remix)<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>The #1 song of 1996 returns for its second straight year end chart.<\/p>\n<p>#81: Luscious Jackson \u2013 <em>Naked Eye<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 13 plays<\/p>\n<p>Hitting #36, it remains the band&#8217;s lone charting single.<\/p>\n<p>#69: Chumbawamba \u2013 <em>Tubthumping<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 31 plays<\/p>\n<p>The only single from the group to chart in the US, it peaked at #6.<\/p>\n<p>#67: Eric Clapton \u2013 <em>Change the World<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>A 43-week stay on the Hot 100 gives Clapton a second year-end spot for his final top ten hit.<\/p>\n<p>#64: Donna Lewis \u2013 <em>I Love You Always Forever<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 12 plays<\/p>\n<p>A nine-week stay at #2 propelled Lewis to the year-end chart for the second year in a row.<\/p>\n<p>#63: Sarah McLachlan \u2013 <em>Building a Mystery<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 22 plays<\/p>\n<p>The Grammy winner for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1998, it reached #13.<\/p>\n<p>#60: Sheryl Crow \u2013 <em>Everyday Is a Winding Road<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 30 plays<\/p>\n<p>Featuring background vocals from Neil Finn of Crowded House, it went to #11 on the Hot 100.<\/p>\n<p>#55: Sheryl Crow \u2013 <em>If It Makes You Happy<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 14 plays<\/p>\n<p>Spending 27 weeks on the Hot 100 across 1996 and 1997, it made the year-end chart both years.<\/p>\n<p>#50: Celine Dion \u2013 <em>It&#8217;s All Coming Back to Me Now<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>Recorded three times, by Pandora&#8217;s Box, Dion, and Meat Loaf, Dion&#8217;s most was the most successful, charting at year-end for the second straight year.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>#39: Shawn Colvin \u2013 <em>Sunny Came Home<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 15 plays<\/p>\n<p>The singer&#8217;s only charting single to date, it topped out at #7.<\/p>\n<p>#38: Paula Cole \u2013 <em>Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 20 plays<\/p>\n<p>Garnering multiple Grammy noms, the leads single from Cole&#8217;s sophomore effort peaked at #8, becoming her first and last top ten hit.<\/p>\n<p>#23: Blackstreet featuring Dr. Dre \u2013 <em>No Diggity<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 12 plays<\/p>\n<p>Charting for the second year in a row, the song, used as the walkup song on occasion by former White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton, won the Grammy for Best R&amp;B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.<\/p>\n<p>#21: The Verve Pipe \u2013 <em>The Freshmen<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 24 plays<\/p>\n<p>Recorded three times by the band starting in 1992, the final version broke through, giving the band their only top ten hit. reaching #5.<\/p>\n<p>#20: The Notorious B.I.G. featuring Puff Daddy and Mase \u2013 <em>Mo Money Mo Problems<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>Released posthumously, it spent two weeks atop the Hot 100, making him the only artist two have two #1 hits with singles released following their death.<\/p>\n<p>#17: Third Eye Blind \u2013 <em>Semi-Charmed Life<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 17 plays<\/p>\n<p>The lead single from the band&#8217;s debut album, it spent 43 weeks on the Hot 100, peaking at #4.<\/p>\n<p>#15: Meredith Brooks \u2013 <em>Bitch<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: 21 plays<\/p>\n<p>Spending four weeks at #2, it remains the lone Top 40 hit for the Oregon-based singer.<\/p>\n<p>#12: Hanson \u2013 <em>MMMBop<\/em><br \/>\niTunes stats: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>The lead single
