{"id":19744,"date":"2023-05-15T08:56:15","date_gmt":"2023-05-15T14:56:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/?p=19744"},"modified":"2023-05-14T15:42:19","modified_gmt":"2023-05-14T21:42:19","slug":"yet-another-mix-tape-monday-volume-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/2023\/05\/yet-another-mix-tape-monday-volume-17\/","title":{"rendered":"Yet Another Mix Tape Monday \u2013 Volume 17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/dc90.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1479\" title=\"dc90\" src=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/dc90.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a>33 years ago, during my sophomore year of high school, I put together the first of what would eventually become a nearly 20 volume collection of mix tapes, containing my favorite songs that I had gathered either from the radio, a cassette tape, or (eventually) CD.\u00a0 Today, we revisit those mix tapes for the fourth time and see how, or if, the soundtrack of my youth still resonates in today\u2019s digital world and how much has changed over the past four years.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney Love is certainly one of the more interesting characters to come out of the 90s.\u00a0 She moved to LA in the 80s, hoping for an acting career, but managed just a few bit parts before forming Hole with guitarist Eric Erlandson in 1989.\u00a0 Following the release of their first album, <em>Pretty on the Inside<\/em>, in 1991, Love briefly dated Billy Corgan and Kurt Cobain.\u00a0 By late 1991, Love and Cobain had re-united and, in February of 1992, the pair were married.<\/p>\n<p>In October of 1993, Hole recorded their second album, <em>Live Through This<\/em>, which, according to rumors, was heavily ghost-written by Cobain.\u00a0 The album was released on April 12, 1994, just one week following Cobain&#8217;s suicide.\u00a0 The album was both a critical, and commercial, success, opening more doors for Love.\u00a0 When not touring, she returned back to Hollywood, getting small roles in <em>Basquiat<\/em> and <em>Feeling Minnesota<\/em> before scoring a starring role in <em>The People vs. Larry Flynt<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>1998 saw the release of <em>Celebrity Skin<\/em>, the band&#8217;s last album before disbanding in 2002.\u00a0 Love&#8217;s former boyfriend Billy Corgan, by now a huge star in his own right, officially has co-writer credit on five of the album&#8217;s twelve tracks, including the first two singles.\u00a0 Rumors, again, say he had a much larger part in defining the sound of the album.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty years later, YouTube videos have started calling into question Love&#8217;s musical talents.\u00a0 Isolated tracks of her voice and guitar playing during live performances show a dramatic difference from the album versions.\u00a0 How much of Hole&#8217;s success was due to Love and how much was due to her romantic relationships?\u00a0 We probably will never know.<\/p>\n<p>What we do know is the Hole appears twice on Volume 17, which picks up in early 1995 and the second semester of my junior year and takes us into early summer. \u00a0At this point, it is nearly all alternative, with just one hip-hop breakthrough.<\/p>\n<h3>Side A<\/h3>\n<p>Hole &#8211; <em>Asking For It<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 21 plays, most recently on 4\/22\/2021<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">One of three Hole songs to officially feature a contribution from Kurt Cobain, the latest from Courtney Love and company increased its play total by four after and hasn&#8217;t been heard in well over a year.<\/p>\n<p>Cranberries &#8211; <em>Twenty One<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 13 plays, most recently on 6\/6\/2021<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The minor hit from the band&#8217;s second album more than doubled its number of plays in the last four years.<\/p>\n<p>Veruca Salt &#8211; <em>Number One Blind<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 25 plays, most recently on 11\/11\/2021<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The follow up single to <em>Seether<\/em> added eight new listens, despite not being heard in over a year.<\/p>\n<p>Stone Temple Pilots &#8211; <em>Unglued<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 33 plays, most recently on 10\/21\/2022<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Peaking at #16 on Billboard&#8217;s Modern Rock Tracks chart, the track added ten new plays in the last four years.<\/p>\n<p>Pearl Jam &#8211; <em>Better Man<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 14 plays, most recently on 11\/9\/2019<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Last heard prior to the global shutdown thanks to the corona virus, the biggest hit from the grunge superstars&#8217; third album, which spent eight weeks at the top of Mainstream Rock chart, added a paltry three listens.<\/p>\n<p>Nirvana &#8211; <em>Where Did You Sleep Last Night<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 12 plays, most recently on 6\/8\/2022<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The traditional American folk song, recorded for <em>MTV Unplugged<\/em> and released following the death of lead singer Kurt Cobain, picked up a mere five new listens.<\/p>\n<p>Weezer &#8211; <em>No One Else<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 23 plays, most recently on 3\/19\/2021<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Never released as a single but with plenty of radio airplay, Weezer&#8217;s latest picked up six new listens over the past four years.<\/p>\n<p>Offspring &#8211; <em>What Happened To You?<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 20 plays, most recently on 10\/14\/2018<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Not a single listen for the final offering from Offspring&#8217;s debut album, which was never officially released as a single.<\/p>\n<h3>Side B<\/h3>\n<p><!--more-->Bush &#8211; <em>Everything Zen<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 21 plays, most recently on 11\/11\/2022<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Peaking at #5 on Billboard&#8217;s Mainstream Rock chart, the debut song from Gavin Rossdale and company added five new listens over the past four years.<\/p>\n<p>The Ass Ponys &#8211; <em>Little Bastard<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 23 plays, most recently on 11\/23\/2022<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The lone single from the Cincinnati-based band, originally recorded off of Q101, added six listens over the past four years.<\/p>\n<p>Hole &#8211; <em>Violet<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 19 plays, most recently on 6\/18\/2021<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Written in 1991 about Courtney Love&#8217;s failed relationship with Billy Corgan, Hole&#8217;s second appearance on this tape managed five listens despite not being heard in over a year and a half.<\/p>\n<p>Letters To Cleo &#8211; <em>Here and Now<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 34 plays, most recently on 11\/23\/2022<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Featured on the <em>Melrose Place<\/em> soundtrack, the first hit for the Boston rockers added six new listens over the past four years.<\/p>\n<p>Oasis &#8211; <em>Live Forever<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 25 plays, most recently on 9\/27\/2022<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Also written in 1991 and inspired by a Rolling Stones track, the breakthrough hit for the Gallagher brothers added seven new listens.<\/p>\n<p>Collective Soul &#8211; <em>Gel<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 25 plays, most recently on 6\/11\/2020<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Hitting #14 on Billboard&#8217;s Modern Rock Tracks chart, the first hit from Collective Soul&#8217;s sophomore effort added six listens despite not being heard since the early days of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Dre &#8211; <em>Keep Their Heads Ringin&#8217;<br \/>\n<\/em>iTunes stats: 38 plays, most recently on 5\/4\/2022<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Dr. Dre&#8217;s contribution to the <em>Friday<\/em> soundtrack, which peaked at #10 on the Billboard charts, picked up seven listens in these last four years.<\/p>\n<p>Better Than Ezra &#8211;
