{"id":1851,"date":"2012-05-19T07:17:14","date_gmt":"2012-05-19T13:17:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/?p=1851"},"modified":"2012-05-18T17:58:48","modified_gmt":"2012-05-18T23:58:48","slug":"godspeed-kerry-wood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/godspeed-kerry-wood\/","title":{"rendered":"Godspeed, Kerry Wood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/capt.pps10510110050.nlcs_cubs_marlins_pps105.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1852\" title=\"capt.pps10510110050.nlcs_cubs_marlins_pps105\" src=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/capt.pps10510110050.nlcs_cubs_marlins_pps105.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"409\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/capt.pps10510110050.nlcs_cubs_marlins_pps105.jpg 409w, http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/capt.pps10510110050.nlcs_cubs_marlins_pps105-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 409px) 100vw, 409px\" \/><\/a>On April 12, 1998, Kerry Wood pitched in his first major league game, a 4-1 loss to the Expos.\u00a0 Yesterday, he pitched in his last, a 3-2 loss to the White Sox.\u00a0 Along the way, he, and Cub fans, experienced plenty of highs (the 20 strikeout game, 3 division championships, 1 wild card birth, the 2003 NLDS victory over the Braves) and lows (injuries, the 2003 NLCS collapse against the Marlins, injuries, 9 straight playoff losses, injuries).<\/p>\n<p>Word started to leak out early Friday morning that Wood was planning on calling it quits, following an errant tweet from his wife.\u00a0 Things had not been going well for him this season, and his aching arm did not seem to be up to the challenge of bouncing back day after day in the bullpen.\u00a0 Because of the meltdown in his last appearance, where he was booed off the field and tossed his glove into the crowd in anger, Wood wanted to pitch one last time.\u00a0 He got his chance in the 8th, with the Cubs down by one and Dayan Viciedo at the plate.<\/p>\n<p>Like the Wood of old, he struck out Viciedo and, like that, it was over.\u00a0 Acting manager Jamie Quirk came to the mound and Wood left the field to a standing ovation, right into the arms of his son.\u00a0 After the game, he officially announced what everyone already knew, that he was walking away from the game, and team, that he loved.<\/p>\n<p>I first saw Wood pitch in person on May 2, 2000 against the Astros, his first game back after elbow reconstruction surgery wiped out his 1999 season.\u00a0 Besides winning the game, Wood also thrilled the crowd with a home run off of Jose Lima.\u00a0 I saw him pitch 57 more times over the years, first as the ace of the Cubs staff, then as their closer, as an Indian and Yankee, and, finally, back home as a set up man, expected more to sell tickets and put butts in the seats than to get batters out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wood-marquee.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1853 aligncenter\" title=\"wood-marquee\" src=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wood-marquee.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wood-marquee.jpg 640w, http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wood-marquee-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>Highlights include the showdown he won against the Yankees and fellow Texan Roger Clemens as the Rocket tried for win number 300, a few epic meltdowns in crosstown games against the White Sox, the home run and ultimate failure in game 7 of the NLCS against the Marlins, and, sadly, the injuries that robbed him of much of the promise he showed as a fresh faced 20 year old back in 1998.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Wood&#8217;s numbers in games I attended were:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" bgcolor=\"#ffffff\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th bgcolor=\"#c0c0c0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;
