{"id":16574,"date":"2021-01-03T02:09:05","date_gmt":"2021-01-03T08:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/?p=16574"},"modified":"2020-11-24T08:18:03","modified_gmt":"2020-11-24T14:18:03","slug":"by-the-numbers-73","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/2021\/01\/by-the-numbers-73\/","title":{"rendered":"By The Numbers \u2013 73"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/cws-chi.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7973 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/cws-chi.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/cws-chi.jpeg 500w, http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/cws-chi-300x182.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>In 1929, uniform numbers appeared on the back of baseball jerseys for the first time, thanks to the Indians and the Yankees.\u00a0 By 1937, numbers finally appeared across all uniforms, both home and away, across both major leagues.\u00a0 Since that time, 81 distinct numbers have been worn by members of the White Sox, while the Cubs boast 76.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we continue our look at those players, picking our favorite, if not the best, player to wear each uniform number for both Chicago teams with #73.\u00a0 A single player has donned #73 for each Chicago team.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tphil.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10005\" src=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tphil.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"544\" srcset=\"http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tphil.jpg 419w, http:\/\/learningturkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tphil-231x300.jpg 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" \/><\/a>Tony Phillips had a turbulent 1996 season with the White Sox, retiring for 48 hours during spring training and getting into a fistfight with a fan at County Stadium in Milwaukee in May.\u00a0 When Albert Belle signed with the White Sox prior to the 1997 season, Phillips gave up his #8 and switched to #73.\u00a0 His tenure with the number, however, was short lived.\u00a0 On April 21, he was ejected 3 pitches into that night&#8217;s game against the Yankees.\u00a0 Phillips had to be restrained by 3 White Sox players and ended up getting suspended for 2 games.\u00a0 He accused American League president Gene Budig of being a racist, which Jerry Reinsdorf called &#8220;out of line,&#8221;
